Stone Fragments Discovered during the Installation of a Sewage System in the Village of Dandit

An archeological assembly led by the general manager of the antiquities of Daqahliyya visited the village of Dandit on Monday, January 6th, 2020, where ancient stone fragments were discovered during the installation of a sewage system.

Dr. Moustafa Waziri, general manager of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, stated that the blocks were buried four meters beneath accumulated debris. Two blocks are made of alabaster, and are inscribed with hieroglyphic texts. The first is 108 cm long, 64 cm wide, and 30 cm thick, and the second is 80 cm long, 64 cm wide, and 24 cm wide. A third block, 68 cm long, 45 cm wide, and 40 cm thick, is made of limestone and, unlike the other two fragments, does not bear any inscriptions. The deposit in which the three blocks were found also contained some pottery remains.

Dr. Waziri confirmed that all digging operations in the area have ceased, and that the necessary measures are being carried out to move the blocks to a museum’s magazine, adding that a team of specialists is being sent to conduct rescue archeology.
