The world celebrates on April 18th of each year World Heritage Day, aiming to advocate for the protection of human heritage, while raising awareness and recognising the efforts of responsible international bodies and organizations.
The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) proposed celebrating World Heritage Day in 1982.
This year, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in Egypt celebrates World Heritage Day by hosting temporary archaeological and heritage exhibitions, as well as artistic and educational events and workshops for adults and children in several Egyptian museums.
Egypt boasts seven sites registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List, including six cultural heritage sites: Historic Cairo, Memphis and its necropolis from Giza to Dahshur, Ancient Thebes and its necropolis in Luxor, Abu Mena in Alexandria, the ancient monuments of Nubia in Aswan, and St. Catherine in South Sinai. Additionally, Egypt has one natural heritage site, Wadi Al-Hitan (Whale Valley) in Fayoum.
