Al-Sharqiyya National Governorate Day is a commemoration of when the patriotic Sharqiyyan leader Ahmad Orabi presented the nation’s demands to the Khedive in 1881 on Abdin Square in Cairo. Several archaeological sites, such as San al-Hagar and Tell Basta, are located in this governorate as well.
