A Guided tour in The Islamic Art Museum in Cairo

People during the Mamluk era were known for finding beauty in the smallest details even if its the simplest objects such as this marble water jar found in the museum of Islam Art. 

The jar decorated at the neck with raised Kufic inscriptions and at the bottom with four fish. The body is decorated with vegetal stems and leaves. It was brought in to the Museum of Islamic Art from the mosque/ madrasah of Tatar al-Ḥijāziyyah 761AH-1359AD. 

The jar was used as a Sabil for passers-by as well as all creatures to drink clean water. 

The stand of the water jar “kilgah” is also made of marble and has four legs decorated with Kufic writings and animal figures on its sides. Water was put in this “kilgah” for birds and animals to drink.
