Today marks the anniversary of the discovery of Queen Nefertari’s tomb, discovered by the Italian archaeological mission led by Ernesto Schiaparelli in 1904. This discovery offered the world a rare glimpse into the artistry of ancient Egypt, whose mysteries continue to captivate the world. Queen Nefertari, the principal wife of King Ramses II, was honoured with a beautifully crafted tomb in the Valley of the Queens.
In 1986, the Getty Conservation Institute, in partnership with the Supreme Council of Antiquities, undertook restoration efforts on this remarkable tomb and inaugurated for public for limited visitors. However, in March of this year, the tomb was closed to monitor humidity levels and evaluate the possibility of reopening it under controlled conditions to protect it from potential damage due to high visitor traffic.
