Ram Mummy

Ram Mummy

Rams were sacred to Khnum, a creator god who was often shown shaping people on a potter's wheel before they were born. He was depicted as a ram‑headed man. As part of his animal cult, this spectacular mummy, encased in cartonnage (layers of linen drenched in plaster) that has been shaped like a ram with a brightly painted front and a gilded head, was dedicated to Khnum on Elephantine Island, his main cult center.
